The Rock of Chickamauga A Story of the Western Crisis Joseph A. Altsheler 9781374833555 Books Reviews

It isn't hard to read between the lines, his dedication and selfless devotion to the tasks assigned to him. I think this rings true and I am proud to have a young man like this I would be proud to call him brother in spirit. Fellow soldier. I was not even born when these battles were happening, but they tell you what our young men are made of and makes me proud to have been a soldier even though I never had any trenches but we had some well built guard tower's an well fortified bunkers built all around our perimeter, I was lucky to be serving with some great young men most about my same age I turned 21 in Vietnam.

This is testimony of a very miserable war. Like other war's they are mostly political chess game's. We could not advance and get r dun until orders were sent from the US GOVERNMENT, our hands were tied this young man was at least in a real unit where the officer's had more flexibility to act when needed. Vietnam was not even called war it was "Vietnam Conflict". You can bet someone recieved financial gain.

It was a war that Americans should never have been involved in. The people of northern Vietnam and southern Vietnam. It had been going on for years before we were thrown into the middle of it France had been there for years. They got smart and got out. It is particularly similar to what is going on in Iraq they have been at war since before Crist was born in Bethlehem. I agree that when 9 / 11 happened we were drawn into a war, against terrorism, fine get the terrorists and GET OUT this war will only stop when Jesus Christ returns. Nobody mortal is going to stop it.

Sincerely Bubba
Like the book but feel the author could have really had a great work if they would have expanded on some of the scenes as far as details and depth. Kind of hard to follow as it jumps from point to point.
I give it a 5+ Great book. Altsheler really knows civil war history. I would recommend it to all civil war buffs and all who want to read a good
action story. His day-today account of the soldiers and battles they fought is wonderfully written. What a tragic loss of American lives!
For my money, anyone who wants to understand what it took to fight in the War Between The States needs to seriously consider the books in this series. The author, Altsheler, himself a participant in the Civil War, has insights and perspectives that are rarely written down. And he makes the series an easy read. One I didn't want to put down. Couldn't wait for the next book.

He helps the reader envision and believe what they're reading regarding the layout, troop movements and attitudes of the Generals involved in various campaigns throughout the war. He is as graphic as he could have been in his descriptions of battles, fighting conditions, general morale of the troops on both sides of the fight, the antics of the characters throughout the series and still conveys the horror of the war. By today's standards, the descriptions of wounds and the dead are tame in comparison but it needs to be noted that the editors of the day did not allow the liberties that 20th and 21st Century editors have been allowed.

In my mind, the series by Altsheler should be relegated to the same Classical status as The Red Badge Of Courage.
A very interesting story about the civil war from the perspective of the north. It deals the battles of regiment of soldiers fighting first in Mississippi and then in Tennessee. I would read more stories by this author.
This is a novel that tells its story based upon the larger true events. I'm not a fan of using novels to convey accounts of history. This book came at no cost and I decided to give it a brief read to see if it helped me understand the Battle of Chickamauga better. It didn't. I read a portion of the book and set it aside. I'll go back to other factual accounts that satisfy my interests better.
In this battle General Thomas earned his legendary nickname The Rock of Chickamauga. His gallantry and respect of his soldiers who fought so bravely that day prevented a rout by the South. It was the first time during the War the Yankees were outnumbered in a major battle thanks to General Lee sending relief on trains with reinforcements. Thirty thousand future generations wiped out that bloody day in Tennessee because of stupid, arrogant politicians on both sides and they still haven't learned anything in Washington D.C. today they continually wage war and our infrastructures crumbles.
This is the second book in the Civil War Series by this author that I have read, the first was "The Guns of Shiloh." Both are excellent adventure stories, but they are also filled with an historically accurate account of the Civil War battles in the west. I followed each battle with maps from the internet which was very helpful and I reccomend doing this to get the full picture , though Altsheler's descriptions are vivid and correct. These books are written for a youthful audience and the main protagonists are young Union soldiers in their teens, but older characters are just as well developed and in some cases, as with the real life officers and generals such as Grant, Sherman, Johnston, etc. you gain an insight into their characters and accomplishments. Though these well written novels use wonderful and creative adventures to bring the history and details of the war into view, you come away with a good history lesson under your belt, obviously the author's intention! He has written other books about the war from the Confederate point of view, which I have not yet read. He treats both sides with fairness and respect. I am in the senior age group, and recommend these books to any one of any age who is interested in accurate history related with spirit and adventure! They would have made good movies!
