Thank you to Autumn for providing me with an eARC of this book for review.

After such a heart wrenching ending to Legacy Code (see my review here) I was eager to get to read Paragon.
I wanted to see where the story was going to go.
Would the secrets Era discovered be told to the whole fleet?
So many questions!

The story was told through 3 different point of views, Tadeo, Zephyr, and another character which I won't name because it would be a spoiler.

The opening of Paragon was hard to read. I wanted to hate Tadeo. He had the opportunity to save Era but he knew he would not be able to without sacrificing himself as well. So I understood and wanted to understand him. Throughout the entire book I had a love/hate relationship with him. He is completely loyal and that has to be admired. I guess...

Zephyr annoyed me at first when she came into the book. She was, of course, distraught after hearing about what happened with Era. I felt like she should have tried to do something more urgently. However, near the end of the book she did become badass, standing up for herself and her friend. I can't wait to see what happens with her in the next book and see what she does with the information Era left behind.

The 3rd POV through in an interesting perspective to see what that character was going through while everything was happening on the Paragon.

Full of questions, traitors galore, secrets & suspicions.
You can't even trust your own family in this world!

Can't wait for more Autumn! <3

Paragon Legacy Code Book Two Fractured Era Legacy Code Volume 2 Autumn Kalquist 9780692338735 Books Reviews

PARAGON is a worthy successor to LEGACY CODE, effortlessly picking up the former’s tension and pace. After the devastating WHAM! ending of LEGACY CODE (warning for SPOILERS for the first book from this point forward), we pick up with…

..A seeming villain from the first book, Tadeo Raines, who quickly becomes more sympathetic as we find him haunted by the death of a seemingly crazed pregnant woman who obviously knew something she shouldn't. He pursues fragments of this mystery while also facing a much more immediate threat Terrorism. We also follow Era's dear friend Zephyr as she struggles to cope with her friend's death and uncover the truth behind Era's seeming suicide.

Another character's surprise survival I will leave a secret, but it leads to a harrowing struggle for life. All these elements wind together, culminating in yet another ending that has me desperate for a sequel. Please write faster, Ms. Kalquist!
This is the second book (Legacy Code is the first) of a continuing series, simply a solidly good piece of science fiction, well plotted, tautly written, fast paced, and with characters you care about. It is set in some distant future on an aging and deteriorating fleet of ships carrying all that remains of humanity as they seek a "New Earth." It is impossible to tell how long they have been out there, but it's been too long, and it appears that generations have lived and reproduced and died on the ships. Currently they orbit a fiercely inhospitable planet that they are trying to mine for the resources they must have to continue on their way, but there seem to be opposing forces at work, a possibly despotic government, an incipient revolution, and ordinary citizens caught in the crossfire. There are no aliens, no great set-piece space battles, just humans struggling desperately to survive in the hostility of airless space. If they can't find a hospitable planet...

This book continues breathlessly right where the previous book---Legacy Code---left off. A young guardsman, tragically involved in the devastating action of the last chapter, must now somehow move forward with his life as he begins to question his own motives and loyalties. Some of the plot begins to remind me, just a little, of a great classic of the genre, Logan's Run.

Most impressive is the authenticity of the characters and dialogue; Autumn Kalquist has done a great job of holding my interest. The characters are well fleshed out. There are very few background characters, and even they cause a picture to form. The pace is fast, the dialogue believable. Over time I have read a lot of frankly "hokey" science fiction; this is not that! I almost literally could not put my down! I now look forward eagerly for the next installment.
I just finished the book and I was blown away. I read all the stories/novels in this series and enjoyed them all but this was the best. I recommend reading them in order but the core story is with Legacy Code and then Paragon (the full-length novels). The other stories are prequels.

This book is written in third-person limited and switches among 3 characters Tadeo, Zephyr, and Dritan. The things I love most about the books is you experience what the characters are feeling and thinking love, pain, desperation, fear. The story is very suspenseful, making you want to stay up and read into the night. I also found Tadeo's deductive reasoning interesting (because you unravel the mystery along with him) while he was investigating the actions of the 3 terrorists.

There is some mention of sex in Tadeo's reminiscing but there are no sex scenes. It may be appropriate for teen readers although I would consider it a book written for adults. There is rare use of explicit language but the author uses "kak" for "s***" more often than the traditional explicit words we are familiar with.

Although it was a science fiction novel somewhat like a Star Trek world, it's a book anyone can enjoy that loves a good, well-written story with strong, admiral characters facing difficult decisions. It is a dark story that will make you feel emotional at times. I highly recommend this book!
