By the Sea Poems of Love Longing and Lust eBook Feng Zhou Quynh Nhu Nguyen Eva Xanthopoulos

The best poems transport you—either to somewhere you want to be or somewhere you long to get back to. The poems in “By the Sea” take you right up to the water’s edge where (if the weather is right) you can imagine yourself squishing sand between your toes, discovering seashells, and holding on tight to the person you love most in the world.

These are, of course, love poems and like the sea and the surrounding environment—love is mercurial. These poems describe love in all of its various permutations—fleeting, tenuous, powerful or strong. In the poem “Love upon the Coastline” love is “deep and grasping” and described as “granular, delicate affections”. In “I Once had You” love doesn't last and the poem laments a relationship that will never be revived. The poem “The Love Between the Sea and the Sky” describes the love affair between our water and air—only they can fully see each other. All of these different poems about love feel so inevitable and true.

I like these poems because they are each their own tiny world, poignant and accessible. The author, Feng Zhou believes that the goal of poetry is to use the least amount of words to create the biggest possible space and I believe he accomplishes that here. These poems are spare but they make a big impact.

By the Sea Poems of Love Longing and Lust eBook Feng Zhou Quynh Nhu Nguyen Eva Xanthopoulos Reviews

Poetry is one of the many art forms that writers have at their disposal. Most don't use it well or assume no one is going to read, but it's an art form that should be practiced all the time. What you get with "By The Sea" is a collection of poetry that flows from all aspects of life, and more importantly love. The love poem is definitely one of the harder ones to create, and to do so without relying on cheap rhyming mechanisms or going through the same emotions over and over again.

One such example is that of "Piano Awaiting You", where the longing for a connection is likened to the musical instrument and notions of emotional connection with that of the musical instrument. "Wave and Sand Serenade" also proves to be another example, heavy on nature, emotional connection and forthright poetry. From nature to emotional connections, kissing, and embracing reality and fantasy into one is what you get in many of the poems.

What you get here is a lot of different examples of strong poetry, and writing. There is a hope in some tones, there is a longing in others, and lust categorized in such a unique fashion. You'll definitely enjoy the way the authors have crafted the poems, and it will be hard to deny that there is something of ourselves found in these words. As a writer myself, I found this to be a good change of pace from my usual schlock of true crime, mysteries and more. Sometimes, all you need to lift the spirits is to read a few lines of a well-crafted poem, and all is well with the world, and your heart. I liked this book, you will too.
I finished Feng Zhou's Find Yourself and, because I loved it, didn't even wait a day before I bought this collection, sat down, and read it all at once.
If you're interested, you can read the review I left for Find Yourself. It mentions some similarities, like a forward by the author which delves deeply into his perspective on poetry. I did neglect to mention previously that there is a click-able Table of Contents in both books so you can navigate to your favorites with ease. I'll move on now to this particular collection and spell out the goodness within.

As the title suggests, By the Sea is filled with prose about love, longing, and lust. Your mind overflows with the vivid scenes Feng Zhou paints and the emotions they invoke. At times you'll experience a pure, eternal passion, and in others the yearning for such. He writes often of unrequited love and I like to imagine his muse is tethered by a thin silvery string which transverses the ocean, their souls bound together in eternity.

While each poem was a pleasure to experience, a few resounded in such a way they found a nook in my heart. "I So Yearn for That Kind of Time" is a splendid example. A couple embarks for a day at sea, where they reminisce about the past, present, future. They share once youthful dreams and how reality altered them. They laugh; live in the moment completely, allowing the day,and then the sunset, to come to them. The narrator longs for that memory, though he hasn't experienced it. I think it's a perfect reading for couples celebrating an anniversary; the day where they make promises for the next one to be better. Inevitably they get caught up in the rat race, and a yearning for that kind of time gets filed away. A gentle reminder it's never too late to seize the day.

I read "I am?" and found the narrator to be heroic. He doesn't save anyone from a burning building or disaster, but creates a protective force field around the woman he loves. He's been through hell, but wouldn't dream of burdening her with those memories. And it's not because she isn't capable, but rather because his love for her happiness is greater than his past experiences. His undying devotion is repaid, ultimately, by her simple existence and the joy it brings him.

I believe anyone with a heartbeat, whether it's racing with hope and possibility, or steadfast in the comfort of an everlasting love, will envision themselves in this collection. It would make a wonderful gift for your beloved and I plan to read it again and again.
